Ruma Rijal

Ruma Rijal is one of the recipients of the NIMJN Human Trafficking Reporting Fellowship from the Koshi province. This fellowship was open to the training participants of the NIMJN’s Reporting on Human Trafficking and Human Rights using Multimedia Tools training held in Biratnagar for the journalists in Koshi province, supported by Australian Aid. She was selected based on her story idea and pitch related to human trafficking issues in the province. Ruma has a decade-long career in the radio and multimedia journalism sector. She started at Saptakoshi FM and later moved on to writing on social issues focusing on women and marginalized communities. Other areas she covered through her stories include reporting on the issues of women’s health, health services, gender-based violence, rights of people with disability, rights of labor, child rights, and child marriage. Ruma is also a recipient of the Child Sensitive Journalism Award 2018 and the Girls & Women Education Advocacy Award by UNICEF. Ruma is currently working as an executive editor at an online news media Jhalkonepal.com. She is excited to pursue investigative journalism through this fellowship and is looking forward to exploring the human trafficking issues in her region.
